Windows Explorer does not display the correct volume information for a removable media device that is changed when the system is in standby or hibernation in Windows XP SP2 (922678)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You insert a removable media storage device into a USB 2.0 card reader that is attached to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You put the computer into standby or hibernation.
  • You replace the removable media storage device with a different removable media storage device.
  • You resume the computer from standby or hibernation.
In this scenario, Windows Explorer may not correctly display the new media device volume information after the computer resumes. For example, Windows Explorer may report the size of the previous device instead of the new device.

Note The device is still available and will work correctly when you encounter this problem.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the device is replaced when the computer is in a low-power state. The problem occurs in this scenario because no notification message is sent to user-mode applications when the device is replaced. Therefore, Windows Explorer may display incorrect volume information for the device.

However, in this scenario, the file system detects the device change correctly. Therefore, you can access media, and the media device works correctly.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this problem, resume the computer from standby or hibernation before you replace the device.
