Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2005, the sp_altermessage stored procedure does not suppress system error messages that are logged in the SQL Server error log and in the Application log.

Note When you try to run the following query, the query fails, and you receive error message 15178.
exec sp_altermessage 19031, 'WITH_LOG', 'false'

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Restart information

After you apply this hotfix, you do not have to restart the computer if the following conditions are true:
  • If SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services is running as a named instance, you stop the SQL Server Browser service before you apply this hotfix.
  • You exit all Analysis Services tools and all client applications before you apply this hotfix.
  • You exit Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) before you apply this hotfix.

After you apply this hotfix, trace flag 3688 must be turned on when you start SQL Server. If trace flag 3688 is not turned on when you start SQL Server, this problem still occurs. Additionally, you must install hotfix build 9.00.2175.00 or a later hotfix build before you can turn on trace flag 3688.

When an SQL trace is started, error message 19030 is logged in the SQL Server error log and in the Application log. When an SQL trace is stopped, error message 19031 is logged in the SQL Server error log and in the Application log.

In SQL Server 2000, the sp_altermessage stored procedure suppresses error message 19030 and error message 19031.
