Messages are not moved to the Junk E-mail folder of a mailbox in Exchange Server 2003 (922260)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

A spam confidence level (SCL) rating is set to be equal to the Store Junk E-mail Configuration threshold. When this occurs, messages are not moved to the Junk E-mail folder of a mailbox in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.

For example, suppose that the SCL threshold is set to 9. You configure custom weighting to force messages that contain specific words to also have a weight of 9. In this scenario, the messages are not moved to the Junk E-mail folder.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the user interface text incorrectly states Move messages with an SCL rating greater than or equal to in the Store Junk E-mail Configuration area. This area is in the Message Delivery options in Exchange System Manager. The user interface text should state "Move messages with an SCL rating greater than."

For example, the messages are not moved to the Junk E-mail folder of a mailbox if the following conditions are true:
  • The SCL threshold is set to 9.
  • You have custom weighting configured to force messages that contain specific words to also have a weight of 9

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, subtract one (1) from the Store Junk E-mail Configuration SCL threshold. Then, messages with the target SCL rating will exceed the threshold and be moved to the Junk E-mail folder of a mailbox. For example, set the SCL threshold to a value of 8 to move messages with an SCL rating of 9 to the Junk E-mail folder.
