FIX: The Visual Studio 2005 IDE may crash when you try to build a Visual C++ project on a computer that has multiple processors (921538)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to build a Microsoft Visual C++ project in Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, the Visual Studio 2005 IDE may crash. You experience this problem when the following conditions are true:
  • You try to build the Visual C++ project on a computer that has multiple processors.
  • You use the multiprocessor build facility by typing a value that is greater than 1 in the maximum number of parallel project builds box. To set the maximum number of parallel project builds setting, click Options on the Tools menu, expand Projects and Solutions, click Build and Run, and then click OK.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.

To work around this problem, type 1 in the maximum number of parallel project builds box.
