The installation may stop responding when you try to install Office 2003 (921505)



The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Office 2003, the installation may stop responding. Additionally, the following message may be logged in the Microsoft Windows Installer log file:Action ended time: DoDialogSequence. Return value 3.

CAUSE

This issue may occur because of incorrect DCOM settings.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps as appropriate for your operating system.

Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP
  1. Click Start, click Run, type dcomcnfg, and then click OK.
  2. Under Console Root, expand Component Services, expand Computers, right-click the computer whose DCOM settings you want to change, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Default Properties tab, and then make sure that you have the following settings:
    • Default Authentication Level is set to Connect.
    • Default Impersonation Level is set to Identify.
  4. Click the COM Security tab. In the Access Permissions section, click Edit Default, make sure that you have the following settings, and then click OK:
    • For the INTERACTIVE, SELF, and SYSTEM group or user names, the Allow check boxes are selected for Local Access and for Remote Access.
  5. In the Launch and Activation Permissions section, click Edit Default, make sure that you have the following settings, and then click OK:
    • For the Administrators, SYSTEM, and INTERACTIVE group or user names, the Allow check boxes are selected for Local Launch, Remote Launch, Local Activation, and Remote Activation.
Windows 2000
  1. Click Start, click Run, type dcomcnfg, and then click OK.
  2. Click the Default Properties tab, and then make sure that you have the following settings:
    • Default Authentication Level is set to Connect.
    • Default Impersonation Level is set to Identify.
  3. Click the Default Security tab. In the Default Access Permissions section, click Edit Default, make sure that you have the following settings, and then click OK:
    • For the Administrators, SYSTEM, and INTERACTIVE group or user names, Allow Access is selected in the Type of Access list.
  4. In the Default Launch Permissions section, click Edit Default, make sure that you have the following settings, and then click OK:
    • For the Administrators, SYSTEM, and INTERACTIVE group or user names, Allow Launch is selected in the Type of Access list.
