How to install the IntelliType Pro software (921169)

Note All Microsoft keyboards use the IntelliType Pro software.

To install a Microsoft keyboard, install the IntelliType Pro software, and then connect the Microsoft keyboard to the computer.

To do this, use the following methods in the order that they appear in.

Install the IntelliType Pro software

To install the IntelliType Pro software, use one of the following methods.

Download and install the latest version of the IntelliType Pro software from the Internet

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. On the left side of the screen, click Resources, and then click Download Software.
  3. Select the product information, select the operating system, and then select the language.
  4. Click GO.
  5. Click the software link to download the software.
  6. Click Run, and then click OK.
  7. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install the IntelliType Pro software.
  8. Restart the computer.

Install the IntelliType Pro software from the disc that was included with the Microsoft keyboard

  1. Insert the Microsoft IntelliType Setup disc into the CD drive.

    If the IntelliType Setup program does not start automatically, click Start, click Run, type the following text in the Open box, and then click OK:

    cd-rom :\setup

    In this example, cd-rom is the drive letter for the CD drive.
  2. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install the IntelliType Pro software.
  3. Restart the computer.

Install the Microsoft keyboard

To install the Microsoft keyboard, use the appropriate method for the keyboard.

Connect a universal serial bus (USB) keyboard to the computer

  1. Start the computer.
  2. If the PS/2 adapter is connected to the USB connector on the keyboard, remove it.
  3. Locate an available USB port on the computer or USB hub.
  4. Plug the USB connector for the keyboard into an available USB port on the computer or on a USB hub that is connected to the computer.
  5. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install and configure the keyboard.

Connect a Microsoft Wireless keyboard to the computer

  1. On the bottom of the Microsoft Wireless keyboard, open and then remove the battery compartment door.
  2. Insert two fresh batteries into the battery compartment. Make sure that you point the positive (+) ends of the batteries toward the positive contacts in the battery compartment.

    Note Two batteries are included with the Microsoft Wireless keyboard.
  3. Replace and then close the battery compartment door.
  4. Make sure that the channel switches on the bottom cordless keyboard and on the Digital Receiver are set to use the same channel.

    Note If you use two Microsoft Cordless keyboards, make sure that the second Microsoft Wireless keyboard and Digital Receiver are set to use a different channel than the first Microsoft Wireless keyboard and Digital receiver.
  5. Shut down, and then turn off the computer.
  6. Plug the PS/2 connector for the Digital Receiver into the round PS/2 keyboard port on the back of the computer.
  7. Start the computer.
  8. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install and configure the Microsoft Wireless keyboard.
Note When you travel, remove the batteries from the Microsoft Wireless keyboard before you board any aircraft. The Microsoft Wireless keyboard emits radio frequency (RF) energy when the batteries are installed, even if the pointing device is turned off.

For more information about radio interference and the correct handling and storage of batteries, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Hardware, point to keyboard, and then click Online User's Guide.
  2. On the Contents tab, expand Setting Up Your Keyboard.
  3. Under the Setting Up Your Keyboard branch, click Important Radio Interference and Battery Information for Microsoft Wireless Keyboard.
