A Macintosh computer cannot authenticate to a server that is running Windows Media Services when you try to use Windows Media Player for Mac (921139)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Services 9 Series, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows Media Player for Mac

SYMPTOMS

On a Macintosh computer, you try to use Microsoft Windows Media Player for Mac to authenticate to a server that is running Microsoft Windows Media Services. When you do this, the Macintosh computer cannot authenticate to the server. You experience this problem when the following conditions are true:
  • On the server that is running Windows Media Services, you enable either the WMS Digest Authentication plug-in or the WMS Negotiate Authentication plug-in.
  • On the server that is running Windows Media Services, you disable the WMS Anonymous User Authentication plug-in.

CAUSE

Windows Media Services supports only the negotiate and digest authentication. However, Macintosh computers support only basic (clear text) authentication. This problem occurs because the authentication methods are incompatible.
