FIX: You receive an error message when you try to create a differential database backup in SQL Server 2005 (921106)

Bug#: 863 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a differential database backup in Microsoft SQL Server 2005, the differential database backup may fail. You may receive the following error message:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Cannot perform a differential backup for database "DataPipe", because a current database backup does not exist. Perform a full database backup by reissuing BACKUP DATABASE, omitting the WITH DIFFERENTIAL option. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

Additionally, you receive the following message in the SQL Server error logs:
<Date><Time> Backup Error: 3041, Severity: 16, State: 1.
<Date><Time> Backup BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE datapipe WITH DIFFERENTIAL. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the internal status flag for a full database backup does not reset after you create the full database backup.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft SQL Server 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.
