BUG: The cluster setup may fail when you try to upgrade SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (917410)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1), the cluster setup may fail.

When this problem occurs, you may receive an error message in the SQL Server error log that resembles the following:
MSI (s) (00!A0) [14:59:51:175]: Note: 1: 2262 2: Error 3: -2147287038 MSI (s) (00!A0) [14:59:51:175]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) -- Error 29512. SQL Server Setup was unable add user Domain\UserName to local group Domain\GroupName. Error 29512. SQL Server Setup was unable add user Domain\UserName to local group Domain\GroupName.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add the SQL Service Account to the domain-level group for the Microsoft Full-Text Engine for SQL Server (MSFTESQL) service before you install SQL Server 2005 SP1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
