FIX: Incorrect data is returned when you change the binding order of two similarly-named output parameters in an application that uses the ODBC driver in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (916528)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

You change the binding order of two similarly-named output parameters from a stored procedure in an application.
The application uses the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 Service Pack 1 (SP1) ODBC driver.
The application is running on a Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer.

In this scenario, incorrect data is returned.

For example, assume that you have a stored procedure that returns parameter values that are named @a1 and @a. In the application that uses the ODBC driver, you bind to @a first and then bind to @a1. In this scenario, the values are returned correctly. However, if you bind to @a1 first and then bind to @a, the parameter values are returned incorrectly.

Note If the shorter of the parameter names is not contained in the other parameter name, the parameter values are always returned correctly. For example, the parameter values are returned correctly if you use @a and @b or if you use @a1 and @a2.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
