SYMPTOMS

When you right-click an image file, and then click Edit, the file does not automatically open. This problem occurs in the products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. Additionally, this problem occurs even when the image files are already associated with the program that you are using.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the Edit feature is not correctly associated with the Microsoft Picture It! program or with the Microsoft Digital Image program that you are using.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. In the My Documents folder, open the My Pictures folder.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. On the File Types tab, select JPE in the Registered file types list.
  4. Under Details for 'JPE' extension, click Advanced.

Note If the Restore option appears, click Restore. The Restore option will change to Advanced. Click Advanced. This resets the program that the file type will use to open. Therefore, you can re-associate the file type to open with the Picture It! program or with the Digital Image program that you are using.
  5. If Edit is not listed in the Actions list, add Edit to the Actions list. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click New.
    2. In the Action field, type edit.
    3. Click Browse, and then locate the installation location for the Picture It! program or for the Digital Image program that you are using. Typically, these programs are found in the following location:

      C:\Program Files\Microsoft program name

Select pi or select pi.exe that has the camera next to it, and then click Open.
    4. Click OK.
  6. In the Actions list, select Edit.
  7. On the right side, click Edit.
  8. Under Application used to perform action, make sure that the path appears as follows:

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 9\pi.exe" %1

This path includes both sets of quotation marks. You may have to add %1 at the end of the path.
  9. Click OK two times, and then click Close.
  10. To test that you have associated the path correctly, right-click a picture, and then click Edit. The picture should open in the Picture It! program or in the Digital Image program that you are using. You should not be prompted to select the file again.
If you had to click Restore in step 4, re-associate the file type to open with the Picture It! program or with the Digital Image program that you are using. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the same file that you closed in step 9 in the previous set of steps, select Open with, and then click Choose Program.
  2. Select the Picture It! program or the Digital Image program that you are using from the list. If the program that you are using is not listed, click Browse, and then locate the program that you want. Typically, this program is found in the following location:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft program name

Select pi or select pi.exe that has the camera next to it, and then click Open.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Click to select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box.
  5. Click OK.
You must repeat these steps for any other file types that you want to behave in this manner. For example, .BMP files or .TIF files.
