FIX: Users cannot start pooled 3270 or LUA sessions on a Host Integration Server 2004 computer when the sessions use DDDLUs on an IBM mainframe (916084)

SYMPTOMS

Users cannot start pooled 3270 or logical unit application (LUA) sessions on a Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004 computer. This problem occurs when the sessions use Dynamically Defined Dependent Logical Units (DDDLUs) on an IBM mainframe.

When an LUA application tries to start a host session through Host Integration Server 2004 by issuing the RUI_INIT verb or the SLI_OPEN verb, the LUA application may display the following error message:

Primary Return Code = 0x0014 (LUA_UNSUCCESSFUL)
Secondary Return Code = 0x00000087 (LUA_COMMAND_COUNT_ERROR)

The exact error message that is displayed by a 3270 emulator may vary, depending on the 3270 emulator that is used. When this problem occurs, the 3270 Client that is included with Host Integration Server 2004 displays the following error message in the Operator Information Area (OIA):

No LU in LU Group Free

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

The IBM mainframe is configured to use DDDLUs.
Multiple host connections are defined in SNA Manager.
One or more of the host connections are in an inactive state in SNA Manager.
The DDDLUs on the host connections are defined as either 3270 logical units (LUs) that are assigned to a 3270 LU pool or LUA LUs that are assigned to an LUA pool. For TN3270, the LUA pool is also assigned to the TN3270 server.
More than five minutes have passed since the IBM mainframe sent the Activate Physical Unit (ACTPU) Request Unit to Host Integration Server 2004 for the host connection that is started in SNA Manager. The ACTPU is sent by the host when the host connection that is defined in Host Integration Server is started. Therefore, this problem occurs five minutes after the connection is started. Users can obtain host sessions that are started in this five-minute window.

If all the host connections are in an active state in SNA Manager, this problem does not occur. Additionally, if the 3270 LUs or the LUA LUs are not assigned to a pool, this problem does not occur.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Host Integration Server 2004 service pack that contains this hotfix.
