INTRODUCTION

To improve performance, Groove uses a fan-out feature when you send a large message to several recipients who use the same Groove relay server. For example, when you send 5 megabytes (MB) of data to 10 members of a workspace, and these members use the same relay server, the data will be sent to that relay server one time and then fanned out to the recipients from the relay server.

MORE INFORMATION

The Groove relay servers determine whether to fan out the data according to the number of recipients on each relay server. Groove uses multiple relay servers. If your organization does not maintain relay servers, one relay server will be randomly assigned to your account when your account is created. Your account will always use that relay server to receive data when it cannot make a direct connection with the sender. Therefore, recipients in the same organization may not have the same relay server. If you send 5 MB of data to 10 members, and those member accounts are spread out evenly across five relay servers with two members on each server, fan out will not occur. However, the fan-out threshold is also affected by connection speed. Therefore, how large a message is and how many recipients it takes to trigger fan out will change with network performance.
