Error message when you try to create a business account or a consumer user account that has a mailbox in Microsoft Provisioning System: "The parameter is incorrect" (914542)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Solution Offering - Hosting Messaging and Collaboration Solution
  • Microsoft Provisioning System

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. In Microsoft Provisioning System (MPS), you try to create a business account or a consumer user account that has a mailbox. To do this, you use the CreateMailbox procedure in the Microsoft Exchange Server Exchange provider. However, the CreateMailbox procedure is unsuccessful, and you receive the following error message:
description="The parameter is incorrect." code="0x80070057"
Additionally, other Exchange provider procedures may be unsuccessful, and you may receive the same error message or a similar error message. This problem may occur intermittently. Typically, you must restart the Microsoft Provisioning Framework Provisioning Engine before users can again be provisioned successfully.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when all the MPS servers in Microsoft Solution Offering - Hosted Messaging and Collaboration (HMC) Solution do not have the same version of the Exchange Server service pack installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the same version of the Exchange Server service pack on all MPS servers and the Exchange Server computer.

Note In an HMC 3.5 environment, you must install Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) on all MPS servers.
