Error message when you try to install various Windows updates on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer: "Setup cannot copy the file update_SP2QFE.inf" (914229)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install various Windows updates on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Setup cannot copy the file update_SP2QFE.inf
When you try to rename the CatRoot2 folder, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
The system cannot find the path specified.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Change the folder options on the computer to show hidden files and folders. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type explorer, and then click OK.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab, and then click Show hidden files and folders in the Advanced settings list.
    4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  2. Locate, and then open the following hidden folder:

    %windir%\$hf_mig$

    Note The %windir% folder is the folder where you installed Microsoft Windows.
  3. Delete the folder of the update that you are trying to install, and then reinstall the update.
  4. Change the folder options on the computer not to show hidden files and folders. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type explorer, and then click OK.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab, and then click Do not show hidden files and folders in the Advanced settings list.
    4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
