The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Word 2003
  • Microsoft Word 2002
  • Microsoft Word 2000
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

A Microsoft Word document may not be automatically saved in the time that you configured in the Save AutoRecover info every: number minutes option.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if Word or the computer is busy with another task when the AutoRecover operation is triggered. Word does not interrupt a task that is in progress. After the task is completed, the document will be automatically saved in the time that you configured.

For example, a Word document may not be automatically saved if any one of the following conditions is true:
  • A dialog box is open in Word, such as the Find and Replace dialog box.
  • Word is running macros.
  • Word is being automated. And, Word is receiving messages because of the automation process.
  • You are typing text very fast in a Word document. Or, you are constantly typing text.
For a Word document to be automatically saved in the time that you configured, Word must be in an idle state for some time.

MORE INFORMATION

When you turn on the AutoRecover functionality in Word, Word creates a temporary AutoRecover file that contains the latest changes to the document. The AutoRecover file is created or updated at the end of a preset time period.

Note By default, the AutoRecover functionality is turned on in Word. This functionality is configured to save the AutoRecover file every 10 minutes.
