SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop Elite to configure the Bluetooth Support Service on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, you may notice that the Bluetooth Support Service does not work after you install the USB transceiver for a Microsoft keyboard or a Microsoft optical mouse. Additionally, you may receive the following error message immediately after you complete the installation of the USB transceiver:
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
Note You may notice that Bluetooth Devices does not appear in Control Panel when you experience this issue. Additionally, you may notice that the Bluetooth Support Service icon in the notification are does not appear when you experience this issue.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of a missing registry entry for the Bluetooth Support Service.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, add the missing registry entry for the Bluetooth Support Service in the Windows registry. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Multi-String Value.
  4. Type bthsvcs, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type bthserv, and then click OK.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Verify that the Bluetooth Support Service is now started. Also, verify that the missing icon in the notification area and the item in Control Panel for the Bluetooth Support Service appear.
