Event ID: 20 may be logged frequently on a Windows Server 2003-based computer when you print to a shared network printer (911713)

SYMPTOMS

When you print to a shared network printer, the following event may be logged frequently in the System event log of a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003:Event ID: 20
Source: Print
Description:
Printer Driver PrinterDriverName was added or updated. Files: ListOfUpdatedFilesYou may also experience excessive bandwidth consumption.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the drivers for a shared printer are not installed on the client computer. The Windows Spooler service copies the drivers to the client computer and logs this event as an informational message.

You experience this problem even if no printer driver was added or updated on the client computer.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
