Multiple files are created when you copy a file that has NTFS alternate data streams to a NFS shared folder (911608)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition (32-Bit x86)
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (32-bit x86)
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition
- Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5
- Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.0
SYMPTOMSWhen you copy a file that has alternate data streams to
a Network File System (NFS) shared folder by using Microsoft Client for NFS, the NFS file system creates multiple files, one file for every stream. For example, the WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe
file has alternate data streams. If you copy the WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe
file to a NFS shared folder by using Microsoft Client for
NFS, you will see the following two
files: - WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe
- WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe:Zone.Identifier:$DATA
CAUSEThis behavior occurs because the NFS protocol does not support
NTFS alternate data streams. Therefore, the NFS file system cannot preserve the
alternate data streams information.
