The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

After you apply security update MS04-012 to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Microsoft COM+ applications may consume more CPU resources than they consumed before you applied the security update. When this occurs, you may experience slow performance in the COM+ applications and on the whole system.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if COM+ class information is never cached. Therefore, the COM+ applications consume more CPU resources by querying the COM+ catalog.

Note This problem is similar to the problem that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 911650, but it is not the same problem.

This problem is fixed by installing the appropriate COM+ hotfix rollup package, whereas the problem that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 911650 requires that you install the appropriate hotfix and also enable a registry subkey.

This problem applies only to Windows 2000, whereas the problem that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 911650 applies to Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, and Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
