Xbox 360: Closed captioning does not appear when mute is turned on (911128)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Xbox 360

SYMPTOMS

Closed captioning may not appear when mute is pressed on the remote control during TV playback even if Windows Media Center is configured to display closed captioning when the audio is muted.

CAUSE

The following issues may be causing this behavior:
  • Windows Media Center is not set to display closed captioning.
  • The television is not set to display closed captioning.
  • The audio-visual (AV) cable that connects the Xbox 360 console to the television may not support closed captioning.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Closed captioning may not be turned on on the TV. To turn on closed captioning, see the TV user's manual.
  2. You may be using a component video output cable to connect the Xbox 360 console to your TV. Xbox 360 does not currently support closed captioning through component video output. To see closed captioning when you are using Xbox 360, connect the Xbox 360 console to the TV by using either an S-video cable or a composite video output cable.
  3. Verify that closed captioning is turned on on the Media Center PC. To turn on or turn off closed captioning, follow these steps:
    1. Press the Start button on the remote control or select the Media Center option in the Media area of the Xbox Dashboard.
    2. When you are connected to the Media Center PC, select Settings.
    3. Select TV, and then select Audio.
    4. Under Caption Display, use one of the following methods:
      • Select On.
      • Select Off.
      • Select On when muted.
    5. Select Save.
