SYMPTOMS

After you update a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer to Microsoft Windows Vista, the Fax service does not work.

CAUSE

In Windows 2000, the Fax service works only when it runs under a user account. However, in Windows Vista, the Fax service must run under the Local System account. The Windows Vista upgrade process does not automatically change this functionality.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Double-click the Fax service, click the Log On tab, click Local System account, click to select the Allow service to interact with desktop check box, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Fax service, and then click Restart Service.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
