FIX: In SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, a memory leak may occur in the handle thread when you run an MDX query that uses formulas or recursions (911023)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

When you run a Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) query that uses formulas or recursions, a memory leak may occur. The memory leak may occur in the handle thread in the Msolap80.dll component file or in the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Msmdsrv.exe process. The memory leak may use all the available nonpaged pool memory.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, increase the stack size of the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Inetinfo.exe process or of the Active Template Library (ATL) Dllhost.exe worker process.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
