How to uninstall MPF Engine servers before you upgrade to Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 3.5 (909767)

When you upgrade a Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 3.0 environment to a Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 3.5 environment, you must first remove all except one of the MPF Engine servers. The upgrade can only be performed in an environment where one MPF Engine server exists.

Consider the following scenario:

• You manually added a second MPF Engine server to an existing Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 3.0 environment.
• You moved the Provisioning Auditing and Recovery Service to a backend Microsoft SQL Server cluster.

You must correctly remove the manually added components and enable the Microsoft Provisioning System (MPS) Deployment Tool from Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 3.5. You must also configure the environment by using two or more MPF Engine servers and a clustered MPF listener service.

To remove an MPF Engine server, follow these steps.

Note The first MPF Engine server is referred to as MPF01, and the second MPF Engine server is referred to as MPF02. The following steps assume that you have already installed Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 3.0 on MPF01.

1. Log on to MPF02 as a member of the Domain Administrators group.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click Change or Remove Programs.
4. Click Microsoft Provisioning Framework (MPF) Engine, and then click Remove.
5. Click Yes to confirm that you want to remove the MPF Engine server from this computer.

To mark the second MPF Engine server as uninstalled in the MPS Deployment Tool, follow these steps:

1. On the desktop of MPF01, double-click the MPS Deployment Tool icon.
2. To back up the current configuration, click File, and then click Export Configuration.
3. In the Export Configuration dialog box, select a location, enter a file name, and then click Save.
4. In the Requirements Status pane, expand MPF Engine, right-click MPF02, and then click Force State.
5. Click Not Installed, and then click OK.
6. Right-click MPF02, and then click Unassign Server.
   
   Note After this step, the MPF Service Account assignment for MPF02 is removed automatically.

Important The remaining steps in this article only apply if you have moved the Provisioning Auditing and Recovery Service to a backend Microsoft SQL Server cluster. If you have not done this, the Provisioning Auditing and Recovery Service will continue to run on MPF01 until you upgrade MPF01 to Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 3.5, and you may ignore the rest of this article.

Important After the following steps, no transaction logging and no rollback of failed provisioning transactions are performed. We recommend that you prevent provisioning requests from performing submissions until the upgrade is completed.

Note You have to follow these steps on every server that has the Provisioning Audit and Recovery Service installed. Typically, the server is one of the MPF Engine servers or a node in the MPF SQL Server backend cluster. In this article, MPFSQLVS01 is a placeholder for the MPF SQL Server backend cluster.

To uninstall the manual configuration of the Provisioning Audit and Recovery Service, follow these steps:

1. Log on to the server that is running the Provisioning Audit and Recovery Service as a member of the Domain Administrators group.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click Change or Remove Programs.
4. Click Microsoft Provisioning Framework Enterprise Edition, and then click Remove.
5. Click Yes.

Note Before you upgrade the MPS Deployment Tool to the Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 3.5 Deployment Tool, you must remove the entries from the restored configuration file in the earlier version of the Provisioning Audit and Recovery Service.

To upgrade the MPS Deployment Tool, follow these steps:

1. Log on to MPF01 as a member of the Domain Administrators group.
2. On the desktop of MPF01, double-click the MPS Deployment Tool icon.
3. Click File, and then click Restore Configuration.
4. In the Requirements Status pane, expand Core Platform, expand Core MPF Install, expand MPF Audit and Recovery, right-click MPF01, and then click Force State.
5. Click NotInstalled, and then click OK.
6. Right-click MPF01, and then click Delete.
7. In the Requirements Status pane, expand Core Platform, expand Core MPF Install, expand MPF Transaction Database, right-click MPFSQLVS01, and then click Force State.
8. Click NotInstalled, and then click OK.

To manually remove the MPF cluster resources from the MPFSQLVS01 cluster, follow these steps:

1. Log on to MPFSQLVS01 as a member of the Domain Administrators group.
2. On the Administrative Tools menu, click Cluster Administrator.
3. In the left pane, expand Resources.
4. Delete the MPFTranLogGroup resource and the MPF Audit and Recovery Service resource.
5. Close the Cluster Administrator snap-in.
