How to install the Small Business Accounting SQL instance (MICROSOFTSMLBIZ) when MSDE is already installed (909627)

Introduction

This article discusses how to install the Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting SQL instance (MICROSOFTSMLBIZ) when Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) is already installed.

If other SQL Server instances are installed and running on the computer, you can install the Small Business Accounting SQL instance.

However, for some installations, you may have to stop all SQL Server instances by using SQL Server Service Manager before you can install Small Business Accounting. If you cannot install the Small Business Accounting SQL instance when other SQL Server instances are running on the computer, you must stop the other SQL Server instances while you install the Small Business Accounting SQL instance. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type services.msc.
  4. Highlight all the SQL instances that start with "MSSQL," and then click Stop on the Action menu to stop the service.

    Note You must follow this step for each MSSQL instance that is running.
  5. Install Small Business Accounting from the installation media.

    Note If you want to change the installation path, you can click Change during the installation.
  6. After Small Business Accounting has been installed, click Next when you are prompted to install Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) .
  7. After MSDE has been installed, make sure that you see the MSSQL$Microsoftsmlbiz folder in the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server

  8. Repeat steps 1 through 3. Find the instances that you stopped in step 4, and then click Start.

    Note You must follow this step for each MSSQL instance that you stopped in step 4.
