SYMPTOMS

Some text on the logon screen may not display correctly on Microsoft Windows XP Embedded with Japanese language support. For example, the following message may not display correctly: Please wait The text eventually displays correctly. Typically, the text displays correctly when you receive the following message: Windows is loading your personal settings

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the system locale is set to Japanese.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, add a String value that is named PreloadFontFile to the following registry subkey. Give this String value a value of msgothic.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

To add this String value, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
  4. Type PreloadFontFile for the name of the String value, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click PreloadFontFile, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type msgothic, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

To configure the system locale, click Start, click Run, type intl.cpl, and then click OK. Click the Advanced tab, and then select the system locale in the Language for non-Unicode programs box. Alternatively, you can set the system locale during the build time by using the Regional and Language Options component in Target Designer.

The registry entry that is described in the "Resolution" section exists in the Japanese localized version of Windows XP. This registry entry does not exist in the English version of Windows XP with the Japanese language support installed, with the Japanese language pack (MUI) installed, or with both of these installed. The registry entry also does not exist in Windows XP Embedded in these configurations because Windows XP Embedded is based on the English version of Windows XP.
