The named instance of Microsoft SQL Server that is associated with WSS is named "SharePoint." This instance appears in the Add/Remove Programs tool as SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (SHAREPOINT).

This updated version of SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows) is an update to the named instance SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (SHAREPOINT) that is only used by WSS. This update contains all the fixes that are included in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4). This update upgrades the existing named instance SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (SHAREPOINT). Therefore, you cannot roll back or remove this update. You must uninstall the named instance SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (SHAREPOINT) and then re-install the individual versions until you have installed the version that you had on the computer before you applied this update.

Note We recommend that you back up all user and system databases that are associated with this instance of SQL Server before you apply this update. If you must remove this update, you will have to restore these databases to return them to their original, pre-update state.
