FIX: You may receive an error message after you set the DownloadGenerationsPerBatch Merge Agent parameter to a large value in SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition 2.0 (909475)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition 2.0 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition 2.0 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition 2.0, after you set the DownloadGenerationsPerBatch Merge Agent parameter to a large value, the client applications that are synchronizing with SQL Server may not synchronize. For example, this problem occurs after you set the DownloadGenerationsPerBatch Merge Agent parameter to 2000. When this problem occurs, you may receive the following error message:
Error code: 80004005
Message: Either the computer running IIS is out of memory or an incorrect RSCBID was sent in a request.
Minor Err: 28003

Additionally, the following event may be logged in the System log: <Date><Time> Warning 0 37 W3SVC <IIS Server Name> Out of process application '<SQL Server CE Virtual Directory Name>' terminated unexpectedly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when an access violation in SQL Server CE Replication Provider (SSCERP20.dll) occurs.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition 2.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition 2.0 installed on the computer.

Restart information

You must restart the Microsoft Internet Information Services WWW service after you apply this hotfix.

Registry information

You do not have to change the registry.

Installation information

After you apply this hotfix, you must reregister the SSCERP20.dll file. To reregister the SSCERP20.dll file, run the following command:

REGSVR32 sscerp20.dll

This hotfix contains only those files that are required to correct the issues that this article lists. This hotfix may not contain all the files that you must have to fully update a product to the latest build.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, set the DownloadGenerationsPerBatch Merge Agent parameter to the default value of 100.
