Xbox 360: How to enable high definition or standard TV playback on a Windows XP Media Center Edition-based computer (909342)

When you use the Xbox 360 as a Windows Media Extender, if your network does not have the bandwidth or the signal strength to support playback of high-definition TV or any TV broadcasts, TV playback is restricted. This article describes how to bypass the playback restriction that is set by the Windows Media Center Network Performance Tuner.

When a Media Center Extender, including the Xbox 360 console, is first connected to a Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition-based computer, the Media Center Network Performance Tuner tests the network bandwidth and the signal strength between the Extender and the computer. If the network does not have the bandwidth or signal strength to support playback of high-definition TV or any TV broadcasts, TV playback is restricted.

When the Network Performance Tuner tests are completed, you can choose not to restrict TV playback. To override the TV playback restrictions later, use the Media Center Extender Manager. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows Media Center-based computer, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Media Center, and then click Media Center Extender Manager.
  2. Select the Extender device that you want to update.
  3. Click Properties.
  4. Under Network Video Restrictions, click to clear the Standard Definition Capable Network check box or click to clear the High Definition Capable Network check box.
