Before Xbox 360, you could not change your original gamertag, except in certain abnormal circumstances. This policy is changed for Xbox 360. If you are an Xbox 360 user, you can now purchase a gamertag change in the Xbox Live Marketplace by using 800 Microsoft Points.

To change your gamertag, follow these steps:
  1. On the Xbox Live menu, select your gamer profile. The gamer profile is the area where your gamer picture and gamertag are located.
  2. Select Edit Profile.
  3. Select Gamertag.
  4. On the Edit Gamertag screen, complete the required information to complete the process.
  5. Confirm the purchase for 800 points.
