    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. Your computer runs either Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). You use the Registration Wizard to register either Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1 online. In this scenario, you cannot complete the online registration. You receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
There is no dial tone. Make sure your phone line is properly connected to the modem.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of a problem in the Registration Wizard (Regwiz.exe).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

You are using an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) version of Windows

For information about how to resolve this problem, contact the OEM who provided the version of Windows that you are using.

You are not using an OEM version of Windows

For information about product registration, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

You can register Windows XP SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1 when you activate Windows. However, if you want to register later, you can do so by using the Registration Wizard. To start the Registration Wizard, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regwiz /r in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Follow the instructions in the Registration Wizard.
