Legitimate e-mail messages are blocked after you enable RBL servers in Antigen (906041)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Sybari Antigen 8.0 for Microsoft Exchange
  • Sybari Antigen 8.0 for SMTP Gateways

SYMPTOMS

After you enable Real-Time Blackhole List (RBL) servers, legitimate e-mail messages are blocked from entering your environment in Sybari Antigen.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, configure an Allowed Mailhosts list or a Sender whitelist so that these e-mail messages can enter your environment. When you enable the Allowed Mailhosts list or the Sender whitelist, e-mail messages that meet the requirement of these lists bypass RBL servers. If you do not want e-mail messages that are sent from a specific domain to be blocked, use the Allowed Mailhosts list. If you do not want e-mail messages that are sent from specific domains and from specific e-mail addresses to be blocked, use the Sender whitelist. When you use the Sender whitelist, you can prevent certain types of scanning from being performed on e-mail messages that come from specific domains or from specific e-mail addresses.

Note If you enable an Allowed Mailhosts list or a Sender whitelist, all e-mail messages will still be scanned for viruses.

To configure an Allowed Mailhosts list, follow these steps:
  1. In Shuttle Navigator, click Filtering, and then click Filter Lists.
  2. In the right pane, click Allowed Mailhosts under List types.
  3. To create a new custom Allowed Mailhosts list, click Add.

If you want to add a domain to the default Allowed Mailhosts list, go to step 5.
  4. Type a name for the new list, and then press ENTER.
  5. Under Filter lists, click the Allowed Mailhosts list that you want to configure, and then click Edit/Import.
  6. Click Add, type the name of the domain that you do not want blocked, and then press ENTER.

Use a wildcard character (*) when you type the domain name. For example, type *domain_name.com. When you use a wildcard character, child domains of this domain will not be blocked.
  7. Click OK, and then click Save in the Filter Lists work panel.
  8. To enable the Allowed Mailhosts list, follow these steps:
    1. In Shuttle Navigator, click Filtering, and then click Mailhost.
    2. Under Filter Lists, click the Allowed Mailhosts list that you configured, and then click Enabled under Filter.
    3. Click Save.
To configure a Sender whitelist, follow these steps:
  1. In Shuttle Navigator, click Filtering, and then click Filter Lists.
  2. In the right pane, click Sender Whitelists under List types.
  3. Under List names, click Add, type a name for the list, and then press ENTER.

Note Antigen does not include a default Sender whitelist.
  4. Click the Sender whitelist that you created in step 3, and then click Edit/Import.
  5. Click Add, type the e-mail address that you do not want blocked, and then press ENTER.
  6. Click OK.
  7. In Shuttle Navigator, click Sender Whitelists under Filtering.
  8. Under Sender Lists, click the Sender whitelist that you created.
  9. To prevent certain types of scanning from being performed on e-mail messages that are received from a specific e-mail addresses, click to select any one of the following check boxes:
    • Spam Scanning
    • Mailhost Filtering
    • Content Filtering
    • Keyword Filtering
    • File Filtering
  10. Under List State, click Enabled.
  11. Click Save.
