A recorded TV program is not deleted from the computer when you use a Media Center Extender device to delete the program in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (905941)

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Media Center Extender device to delete a recorded TV program in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, the TV program is not deleted from the computer's hard disk. However, the TV program no longer appears in the RECORDED TV list on the MY TV screen.

Note This problem does not occur if the TV recording was initiated through the Media Center interface on the Media Center computer itself. This problem occurs only if the TV recording was initiated through the Media Center Extender interface. In the latter situation, you may still receive a "Low disk space" message even after you delete recorded TV programs from the hard disk.

CAUSE

When you use the Media Center Extender interface to delete a recorded TV program, the file is not actually deleted from the Media Center computer until the session ends between the Media Center Extender device and the Media Center computer.

RESOLUTION

To make sure that the deleted TV program is deleted from the Media Center computer, turn off the power to the Media Center Extender device. Or, restart the Media Center computer. By performing either of these actions, you end the session between the Media Center Extender device and the Media Center computer. Therefore, any files that were deleted through the Media Center Extender interface are actually deleted from the Media Center computer.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

When you delete a recorded TV program, the amount of free hard-disk space on the Media Center computer may not be accurately reflected until you perform the procedure that is described in the "Resolution" section.

To determine how much free hard-disk space is available, click Start, click My Computer, and then point to the appropriate hard disk. The total disk capacity and the amount of free space will appear as a ToolTip.

To free space on the hard disk, use the Disk Cleanup tool. This tool searches the hard disk and then lists all the temporary files, Internet cache files, and unnecessary program files that you can safely delete. You can direct Disk Cleanup to delete some of or all those files. To use Disk Cleanup, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
