SYMPTOMS

Every 30 minutes, the Svchost.exe CPU utilization increases on a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced Client computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000. The CPU utilization increase lasts for two minutes to four minutes.

CAUSE

By default, the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) repository backup occurs every 30 minutes on the SMS 2003 Advanced Client computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 if the WMI repository has changed.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, modify the backup interval to 24 hours to minimize the frequency of the WMI repository backup as follows:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WBEM\CIMOM

  3. Right-click the Backup Interval Threshold value on the right pane, click Modify, type 1440 in the Value data field, and then click OK.

    Note The Backup Interval Threshold value is in minutes. If you change the value data of the Backup Interval Threshold value to 1440, you set the interval to 24 hours.
  4. Close Registry Editor. Restart the WMI service.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
