The Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set characters cannot be correctly displayed by using the PMingLiU font (905513)

SYMPTOMS

After you install the March 26, 2003 Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set package (Hkscs2001.exe), Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set characters cannot be correctly displayed by using the PMingLiU font. This symptom can occur in Microsoft Internet Explorer and other programs that use the PMingLiU font.

CAUSE

The issue occurs because the Hkscs2001.inf file of the Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set package replaces the hkscsm3u.ttf value with the micross.ttf value in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontLink\SystemLink\PMingLiU

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontLink\SystemLink

  3. Right-click PMingLiU, click Modify, type hkscsm3u.ttf, and then click OK.
  4. Quit Registry Editor.

To verify that you are using the version of the Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set package that is described in the "Symptoms" section, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type %windir%\inf in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Right-click the Hkscs2001.inf file, and then click Properties.
  3. View the information in the Modified box. If the year is 2003, you are using the version of the Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set package that is described in the "Symptoms" section.
