The inetinfo.exe process uses lots of memory and memory usage continues to increase until the SMTP service is unresponsive in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (905291)

SYMPTOMS

After you start the SMTP service in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), the inetinfo.exe process uses lots of memory. Memory usage continues to increase until the SMTP service is unresponsive. The actual memory leak may occur several minutes or several days after the SMTP service starts.

CAUSE

Under certain conditions, the SMTP service may stop deleting domain entries that are allocated to unique domains.

RESOLUTION

Note Hotfix 910932 supersedes hotfix 905291.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
