Replication does not occur and the File Replication service stops responding in Windows Server 2003 (904824)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • A local replica member of a domain is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
  • The File Replication service (FRS) on this domain member uses a replica set that contains encrypted files and folders.
In this scenario, replication does not occur. Additionally, FRS uses too much CPU time and eventually stops responding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because FRS does not support encrypted files. By default, FRS blocks encrypted files from replicating.

STATUS

MORE INFORMATION

FRS may not detect encrypted files when the original update sequence number (USN) record does not have the encryption bit set. In this situation, encrypted files may be replicated. Additionally, FRS may use too much CPU time on the local replica member and on downstream FRS partners.

For more information about FRS, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/frs/viewer.htm
