SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Exchange Instant Messaging Service in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, you may experience the following problems:

You may experience delays in the Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging client.
Some outgoing queues are pending on the Exchange 2000 server that is running the Exchange Instant Messaging Service.
The number of outgoing queues remains at 255 or 256 when you view this information in the Perfmon.exe tool.
When you query subscription information from the subscription table in the Instant Messaging database, the query sometimes returns records that do not match the query.

This hotfix lets administrators increase the maximum outgoing connections on the Exchange 2000 server that is running the Exchange Instant Messaging Service. This hotfix lets administrators change the value from the default hard-coded value of 256 to any value between 256 and 1024. To implement the hotfix, follow these steps.

Create the dwMaxConnectionsProxy value

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\InstantMessaging
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
In the details pane, type dwMaxConnectionsProxy.
Right-click dwMaxConnectionsProxy, and then click Modify.
In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Decimal under Base.
In the Value data box, type a value between 256 and 1024, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.

Create the dwMaxConnectionsServer value

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\InstantMessaging
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
In the details pane, type dwMaxConnectionsServer.
Right-click dwMaxConnectionsServer, and then click Modify.
In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Decimal under Base.
In the Value data box, type a value between 256 and 1024, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.
