INTRODUCTION

This article describes a software update that you can use to configure Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server to notify you if you try to delete a public folder that contains replicas. By default, Exchange 2000 Server does not include this feature. Therefore, you could accidentally delete the only replica of a public folder when you delete a public folder. This behavior could lead to data loss.

If this software update is not posted for public download (meaning a public URL for this hotfix is not provided in this article), distribution requires technical lead, escalation team member, or manager approval. You must track the customers you send this to and supply them with the next service pack when it becomes available (if a service pack is released).

This software update is not scheduled to be included with an Exchange 2000 Server service pack.
When you use Exchange System Manager to delete a public folder store after you apply this software update, Exchange 2000 Server determines whether the public folder store contains replicas. If the public folder store contains replicas, you receive the following message:You cannot delete this public folder store because it contains folder replicas. To avoid data loss, right click the public folder store and use Move All Replicas to move the replicas to a different server. However, when you right-click the public folder store that you want to delete, a Move All Replicas option is not displayed. To move public folder replicas to another server, the destination server, follow these steps:
  1. Start Exchange System Manager.
  2. Expand Administrative Groups, expand the name of your administrative group, expand Folders, and then expand Public Folders.
  3. Right-click a top-level public folder instance, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Replication tab, and then click Add.
  5. In the Select a Public Store box, enter the name of the destination server, and then click OK.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for all the public folder instances in the public folder store.
  8. After the public folder replicas have been moved to the destination server, make sure that the public folder replicas are synchronized with the source public folders. To do this follow these steps:
    1. Open the public folder properties.
    2. Click the Replication tab, and then click Details.

If the public folder replicas are synchronized with the source public folders, In Sync appears in the Replication Status column.
