SYMPTOMS

You may experience slow performance by some programs on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Note Service Pack 1 is included in x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the HashKey function is exported incorrectly as multi-byte characters instead of as Unicode characters when some programs call this function. The HashKey function is in the Mfc42u.dll file. The Mfc42u.dll file is included with Windows Server 2003 SP1.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing.
