Windows Server 2003 does not appear in the "This program can run only on the specified client platforms" box in Systems Management Server 2003 (900473)

SYMPTOMS

You cannot use the program properties to limit advertised programs to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Specifically, you cannot use the program properties to limit advertised programs in the following operating systems:
  • Original release version of Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003
  • SMS 2003 SP1
The This program can run only on the specified client platforms box on the Requirements tab of the program properties does not list Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2003 SP1. Only All x86 Windows Server 2003 is available in the This program can run only on the specified client platforms box.

Installation information

You must manually run a Microsoft SQL Server update script after you install this hotfix. Additionally, this hotfix stops and then restarts the following services:
  • SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER
  • SMS_EXECUTIVE
  • SMS_SQL_MONITOR
To install this hotfix and run the update script, follow these steps on each SMS 2003 site server in your hierarchy:
  1. Copy the Sms2003-sp1-900473-x86-enu.exe file to a local folder on the site server or to a shared network folder.
  2. On the SMS site server, open the local folder or the shared network folder that contains the Sms2003-sp1-kb900473-x86-enu.exe file.
  3. Double-click the Sms2003-sp1-kb900473-x86-enu.exe file.
  4. On the SMS site server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  5. Stop the SMS_EXECUTIVE service, and then stop the SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER service.
  6. On the SMS site database server, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Query Analyzer.
  7. If you are prompted to connect to the computer that is running SQL Server, make the connection, and then click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Open, and then click the \SMS\Logs\KB886197 folder.
  9. Click Update.sql, and then click Open.
  10. On the Query menu, click Change Database.
  11. Click the SMS database, and then click OK.
  12. On the Query menu, click Execute.
  13. On the SMS site server, start the SMS_EXECUTIVE service, and then start the SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER service.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
