FIX: The Web Proxy Auto Discovery file may not be automatically downloaded for the Real Time Streaming Protocol and for the Microsoft Multimedia Streaming protocol in Windows Media Player (900399)

SYMPTOMS

You can configure Microsoft Windows Media Player to automatically detect proxy settings. However, the Web Proxy Auto Discovery (WPAD) file may not be automatically downloaded as expected for the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) and for the Microsoft Multimedia Streaming (MMS) protocol.

CAUSE

A flag in the registry is not correctly cleared. This flag prevents a new download of the WPAD file.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next release of the Windows Media Format Runtime that contains this hotfix.
