You receive an error message and you cannot change the mouse pointer scheme in Windows XP (899872)

SYMPTOMS

If you try to change the mouse pointer scheme, you cannot change the mouse pointer scheme. Additionally, you receive an error message that states that the mouse pointer files are missing or corrupted.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if one or more of the .cur or the .ani files are missing in the drive letter:\Windows\Cursors folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restore the .cur and the .ani files. To restore the .cur and the .ani files, follow these steps:
  1. Put the Windows XP CD in the CD drive or DVD drive.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Type expand CD drive or DVD drive letter:\i386\*.cu_ %windir%\cursors, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type ren %windir%\cursors\*.cu_ *.cur, and then press ENTER.
  5. Type expand CD drive or DVD drive letter:\i386\*.an_ %windir%\cursors, and then press ENTER.
  6. Type ren %windir%\cursors\*.an_ *.ani, and then press ENTER.
