Telnet is not installed when you install Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003 (899260)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003, you may experience the following problems:
  • Telnet is not installed. The Telnet service is not listed in the Services console (Services.msc).
  • When you type tlntsvr /service to install Telnet, Telnet is not installed.
You may also experience these problems if you apply Service Pack 1 to a Windows Server 2003-based computer.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the computer name includes 15 characters.

Note A computer name that includes 15 characters may be automatically generated during the installation of Windows Server 2003 in either of the following scenarios:
  • You do not specify a computer name when you are prompted during a manual installation.
  • You do not specify a computer name in the Unattend.txt file when you perform an unattended installation.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the 899260 hotfix, and then install the Telnet service. To install the Telnet service, follow these steps:
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    tlntsvr /service

Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. By default, when you install Windows Server 2003 SP1 or an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003, Telnet is installed. However, the Telnet service is disabled.
