SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows 2000, the computer performs more slowly after you double-click a shortcut to an unavailable device or network location many times. When this problem occurs, the desktop may not correctly display, and program menus may not appear.

Typically, this problem occurs after you double-click the shortcut more than 80 times. The shortcut may be to any one of the following:
  • An empty CD or DVD drive
  • An unavailable network location
  • A disabled CD or DVD drive

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the desktop heap is depleted.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, log off and then log on to the computer. Alternatively, restart the computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Windows XP, when you click a shortcut to an unavailable device or network location, you may be prompted to delete the shortcut. In Windows XP, the desktop heap does not become depleted if the shortcut points to an empty CD drive.
