FIX: A Windows Forms-based application may experience a memory leak when a form within the application is set as the owner of another form in the .NET Framework 1.1 and in the .NET Framework 1.1 with Service Pack 1 (899020)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

SYMPTOMS

In the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and in the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), a Microsoft Windows Forms-based application may experience a memory leak when the following conditions are true:
  • A form within the application is set as the owner of another form.
  • You use the AddOwnedForm method to assign ownership of one form to another form within the application.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the owner form holds a reference to the owned form. This prevents the garbage collector from cleaning the owned form even when the owned form is closed and is not being used.
