You should not select the ForestPrep option when you install Live Communications Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (898889)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 Service Pack 1, when used with:
- Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 Standard Edition
- Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 Enterprise Edition
SYMPTOMSConsider the following scenario. You run Setup.exe to install Microsoft Office Live Communication Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1). During the Setup process, you select the ForestPrep option. When you do this, ForestPrep may create LCS global settings under an existing Microsoft
container that is not directly located in the root domain system. Additionally,
after
you start the LCS service, the LCS service stops responding (hangs).CAUSEThis problem occurs when all the following conditions are true: - There is no container that is named ":Microsoft" under the first level of the root domain System container.
- There is a container two or more levels down from the root domain System container at the same time.
When
you run the ForestPrep tool
during LCS setup, ForestPrep performs the following tasks: - ForestPrep
searches the subtree of
the root domain System container to locate
a Microsoft container that
has the CN=Microsoft filter.
If ForestPrep
does not find this container,
ForestPrep creates a Microsoft container under the root domain
System container.
- ForestPrep
searches for
a Real-time Communications (RTC) service container by using a filter. If ForestPrep
does not find this
container,
ForestPrep creates an
RTC service container under the Microsoft container that is found or under
the Microsoft container that ForestPrep created during the subtree search.
If a
Microsoft container exists
two or more levels down from the root domain System
container, ForestPrep
locates this container when ForestPrep performs the subtree search. Because an
RTC service container does
not exist under this Microsoft container, ForestPrep creates an
RTC service container
under the wrong container. This behavior may cause
problems to other dependent services or applications. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Create a container object
under the root domain System container. Then,
set CN for
this object to Microsoft.
- Find the RTC service container that ForestPrep
created during
the subtree search. To do this, in the Live Communications Server administrative
console, run the following Lightweight Directory Access
Protocol (LDAP) query:
objectCategory=msRTCSIP-Service - Move the RTC service container under the Microsoft container
that you created in step 1 of this procedure.
- Run the Setup program again. Make sure that the
ForestPrep
check box is selected
in the Setup wizard.
- Re-create the LCS global settings permissions. If the root
domain was prepared,
prepare the root domain again. If there are child domains that were added
to the forest root, rejoin the child domains.
STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
in the "Applies to" section.
