Outlook Express 6.0 crashes when you click the certificate icon in the preview pane header (898807)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You receive a digitally signed e-mail message in Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0. When you click the certificate icon in the preview pane header to display the certificate details, Outlook Express 6.0 crashes. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
An event that is similar to the following is logged in the Application log: Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 4/25/2005
Time: 8:39:17 AM
User: N/A
Computer: Outlook_Client
Description: Faulting application msimn.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module msoe.dll, version 6.0.2900.2180, fault address 0x00080ef1.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if there is no message selected when you click the certificate icon in the preview pane header.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, click to select the digitally signed message before you click the certificate icon in the preview pane header.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 running on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer.
