The FM radio preset stations may be changed or removed after you change the country setting in Windows XP Media Center Edition (898589)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004
  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

SYMPTOMS

If you change the country setting by using the Regional and Language Options tool in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition, the FM radio preset stations may be changed or may be removed.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because sometimes, the FM radio station tuning schemes are different in different countries. If the regional code is changed to a country and this country does not have a matching scheme, the FM radio presets adjusts to match the scheme for this country. For example, Germany uses a tuning scheme of xxx.xx and the United States uses xxx.x. To match the scheme in the United States, the FM radio program drops the last digit from the presets of Germany. 96.55 in Germany becomes 96.5 in the United States.

Sometimes, the FM radio tuning space is different between countries. The difference can cause the loss of some preset stations. For example, consider the following scenario. A Windows XP Media Center Edition-based computer is configured to use the United States tuning space. If you change the configuration to the Japan tuning space, the FM radio preset stations that are higher than 89.0 MHz are removed.
