How to completely remove Small Business Accounting and Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (897877)

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to completely remove Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting and Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE).

To remove Small Business Accounting and MSDE, follow these steps.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Create a backup of your company, and then save the backup to a location outside the Small Business Accounting folders.
  2. Quit all programs.
  3. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK to start the Add or Remove Programs tool.
  4. Select Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006 , and then click Remove.
  5. Select Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MICROSOFTSMLBIZ), and then click Remove.
  6. Locate the C:\Program Files folder, and then try to locate the Microsoft Small Business folder. Typically, this folder does not exist after you remove the program in step 4. However, if the folder still exists, right-click the folder, and then click Delete.
  7. Locate the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder, and then locate the MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ folder. Then, use only one of the following procedures:
    • If you use Microsoft SQL Server only for Small Business Accounting, right-click the Microsoft SQL Server folder, and then click Delete.
    • If you use SQL Server for other programs, right-click the MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ folder, and then click Delete.
    Note To see whether SQL Server is used for other programs, double-click Administrative Tools in Control Panel, and then double-click Services. Scroll through the list of services, and then locate any service that starts with the letters MSSQL. If the only service that starts with those letters is MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ, you are using SQL Server only for Small Business Accounting. If any other MSSQL services are listed, SQL Server is used for other programs.
  8. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents folder, and then delete the Shared Companies folder.
  9. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\user's name\My Documents, and then delete the Small Business Accounting folder and the Microsoft Small Business Accounting folder. (These folders may not exist. However, if these folders do exist, delete these folders.) You may have to repeat step 9 for each user name.
  10. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit, and then click OK to start Registry Editor.
  11. Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server key.
  12. Note If you do not know whether you use SQL Server for programs other than Small Business Accounting, go to the note in step 7, and then return to step 12.

    Use only one of the following procedures:
    • If you use SQL Server only for Small Business Accounting, right-click the Microsoft SQL Server subkey, and then click Delete. Then, locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer key, and then click Delete.
    • If you use SQL Server for other programs, expand the Microsoft SQL Server subkey, right-click the MICROSOFTSMLBIZ subkey, and then click Delete.
  13. Close all windows, and then restart the workstation.
